Teachers-Go-Free evening at Hayward Gallery
Southbank Centre
Thursday 24 June, 6.00 pm

Southbank Centre are hosting a Teachers-Go-Free evening at the Hayward Gallery to see their summer exhibitions – The New Décor : 50 Years and Ernesto Neto: The Edges of the World

The New Décor brings together sculptures and installations from more than 30 contemporary artists, including some of today's leading sculptors. In the exhibition, the artists use interior design to explore changes in contemporary culture. By reinventing objects we take for granted in our everyday lives, they force us to look at our surroundings in a new light.

This summer, renowned Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto is transforming the Hayward Gallery with a series of spectacular installations. Neto is known for his immersive artworks, often made from stretched lycra, which give the impression of being inside a body. Spices, plastic balls and cushions are used to provide different textures and scents. Neto’s exhibition includes a pool installation on the roof, teachers are welcome to bring a swimming costume and towel – changing room facilities are available but numbers in the pool are limited to 20 people per session.

The Teachers-Go-Free evening also includes an exclusive exhibition tour by Brazilian artist Eduardo Padilha at 6.30pm.

This is an private opening – only for teachers so it is essential that you book in advance. To book:

On Saturday 27 March 10 Lambeth schools took part in the 3rd IBM Robo-Challenge at IBM Southbank. The Robo-Challenge is delivered by IBM in partnership with Lambeth City  Learning Centre and Clapham Youth Centre

The Challenge comprised of five pre-prepared challenges and a final  unseen challenge: Strictly Robo Dancing, Best Dressed Robot, Robo-Race,  Recycled Robots (constructing a robot out of recycled materials),  Programming Under Pressure and Team Presentations.

Teams were allocated points for each Challenge and for overall teamwork  demonstrated throughout the day. The judging panel included  the Chief  Executive of STEMNET, London Borough of Lambeth, FilmClub and Chris  Stanton aka 'Mr. Flatley' from CBBC’s M.I. High.

Sarah Horrocks, Director, Lambeth City Learning Centre said: "This  collaboration between Lambeth City Learning Centre, Clapham Youth Centre  and IBM is exactly the kind of real world education that motivates and  inspires young people in their learning. The project has supported  pupils in developing high level programming, communication and technical skills working alongside professionals and specialists from all three organisations. This is a great example of a Global company working at local level with partner organisations who share the collective goal of raising the aspirations of young people in our borough."

Mark Wakefield, IBM Corporate Citizenship & Corporate Affairs Manager said: "Not only is this a fun and educational event, the children  participating gain invaluable skills which will enable them to  contribute to their communities, to understand the role that technology is playing in their lives and to help them understand more about how technology helps to make the world work better. This year the IBM
Robo-Challenge brought together approximately 70 Lambeth pupils who took  part in a series of complex and demanding robot programming challenges".

Pupils said, "Robo challenge is the best thing for children to learn"."Thank you for this occasion this is the best Saturday ever." "It was the best experience of my life so far and I'd love to come again!"

National Galley – ‘Out of Art into Storytelling’, Lambeth schools enters final phase of project

Posted 19th February 2010

In September 2009, 11 schools from 4 London LAs including 3 from Lambeth were specially selected to work in partnership with their local literacy consultants, Pie Corbett and the National Gallery.

5 teachers from Archbishop Sumner CE , Bonneville and Crown Lane Primary took part in a series of CPD at the National Gallery with sessions led by Pie Corbett (educationalist and author), Susanna Steele (drama specialist) and practitioners from the National Gallery including Ali Mawle their Head of Schools.

Lambeth CLC has worked in partnership withthe  Lambeth Primary Strategy team to support this project.  The final phase involves all schools working alongside CLC tutors to create a piece either a film, animation or digital artwork for possible display in the National Gallery.

The project  focused on using paintings as a stiumuls on pupils’ storytelling skills but the results have impacted more broadly across the whole curriculum;

“I’ve loved being part of the project and have learnt so much, and I hope my class have too! The animation looks brilliant so far - the animators are back in today...and
the children are really enjoying the animation work. We can't wait to see the finished thing.”
Ruth Grimwood, Crown Lane Primary.

An exhibition is planned at the National Gallery for this project and another ‘Enriching the context of writing through drama and art’ for Autumn 2010.

For more information please contact Hannah Quigley, Arts Project Manager, Lambeth CLC hquigley@lambethclc.org.uk .
